Since 1972, we’ve brought watercolor artists together to inspire, learn, and grow.

Painting by founding member Dixie Browning

The Watercolor Society of North Carolina (WSNC) was founded in 1972 by A. Stuffer Myers, a Lexington artist and businessman with a passion for watercolor.

On August 19, 1972, WSNC held its first charter meeting.  Our 18 charter members were: A. Stuffer Myers, Dixie Browning, Jerry Fouts, W.E. Haltom, Odessa Holshouser, Don King, Elizabeth Lawson, Curtis Leonard, Jr., Gertha Love, Mary May, Connie McNeill, Katherine Montgomery, Gertrude Myers, Norma Owen, Edith Saunders, Gerald Schoonover, Katherine Skipper, and Bob Timberlake.

Just a month later, in September 1972, Winston-Salem artist Dixie Browning became WSNC’s first president. The society’s first official meeting in Greensboro drew 80 artists, with guest artist Barclay Sheaks. By spring 1973, WSNC held its first juried exhibition at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, with Frank Getlein as the juror.

WSNC officially became a nonprofit organization in 1979. In 2014, member Richard Staat designed the WSNC logo, which we proudly use on all our materials today.
